Jessica Simpson Reflects on Heartbreak Following Eric Johnson Split: 'I Am Now a Very Single Lady'

Jessica Simpson is sharing her feelings about her recent heartbreak. The singer and actress revealed her emotions during a surprise performance at the Luck Reunion festival on March 13. Simpson, 44, opened up about her split from Eric Johnson, her husband of ten years, whom she announced her separation from in January 2024, PEOPLE reported.

"I was out in Nashville with my heart wide open," Simpson told fans at Willie Nelson's Texas farm. She discussed asking herself personal questions and acknowledged the dramatic changes in her life. "I found out that my world had been turned upside down."

While performing her single "Leave," Simpson expressed her feelings about heartbreak. "Sometimes we’re vulnerable when we open our hearts. It can lead to being broken," she said. She emphasized the importance of self-connection: "When we write, sing, and connect with ourselves, we find answers."

On March 11, just days before her Luck Reunion performance, Simpson returned to the stage for a performance at the Recording Academy's Austin Chapter Block Party during SXSW in Austin, Texas. She showcased her new song, "Blame Me," alongside recent singles "Use My Heart Against Me" and "Leave." Additionally, she honored classic songs like Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" and Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man."

Simpson also debuted "Breadcrumbs" at the event. This performance marks her return after a long break from the music scene.

In January, Simpson and Johnson, 45, who are parents to daughters Maxwell "Maxi" Drew, 12, and Birdie Mae, 5, along with son Ace Knute, 11, announced their separation exclusively to PEOPLE. She stated, "Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage. Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them." Simpson appreciated the love and support they received and requested privacy as they handled this challenging time as a family.
