Jockey Michael O’Sullivan Dies at 24 After Fall in Horse Race

Michael O’Sullivan, a talented Irish jockey, tragically died at the age of 24 after a race incident. His injuries were sustained during the Racing Again February 20th Handicap Chase in Ireland on February 6.
Following the fall, O'Sullivan was hospitalized and placed in an induced coma. He succumbed to his injuries on February 16, as confirmed by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB). Dr. Jennifer Pugh, Chief Medical Officer of the IHRB, reported that O’Sullivan passed away surrounded by family in Cork University Hospital.
The spokesman expressed gratitude for the care O'Sullivan received from multidisciplinary teams both at the racecourse and in the hospital. In a generous act, O'Sullivan’s family chose to donate his organs.

During the racing event, O'Sullivan was one of three riders who fell at the last fence. The rider hailing from Lombardstown, County Cork, was treated at the scene before being airlifted to medical facilities, where he remained until his untimely passing, just five days prior to his 25th birthday.
O’Sullivan's achievements in racing were significant. He became the champion rider under 21 in 2019 and turned professional in September 2022. By the following year, he had gained notable recognition, winning the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham aboard Marine Nationale.
Throughout his career, O’Sullivan claimed 95 winners in both Ireland and Britain. His victories included the Fred Winter with Jazzy Matty and securing the champion conditional title in Ireland with 32 wins.

Dr. Pugh reflected on her time with O’Sullivan, noting, "His dedication, modesty, and kind nature made him a pleasure to be around." She emphasized that his achievements and humility inspired many.
Darragh O’Loughlin, CEO of the IHRB, remarked, "Michael was an exceptionally talented young rider who was always popular in the weighroom. He will be deeply missed by everyone in racing."
O’Sullivan is mourned by his parents, Bernadette and William, along with his brother, Alan. In a mark of respect, sporting events at Punchestown and other venues across Ireland scheduled for February 16 were canceled following the news of his death.
