John Schulman has announced his departure from OpenAI to join Anthropic
John Schulman, a co-founder of OpenAI, recently made the decision to leave the company and join rival Anthropic, reports Reuters. This move, as Schulman mentioned in a post on social media platform X, was driven by his desire to focus more on AI alignment and engage in hands-on technical work.
In a similar vein, OpenAI's President and fellow co-founder, Greg Brockman, has also announced that he will be taking a sabbatical until the end of the year according to his post on X. Additionally, The Information reported that Peter Deng, a product manager who joined OpenAI last year, has departed from the company as well. At the time of this writing, OpenAI has not responded to a request for comment.
These recent personnel changes occur amidst other shifts within OpenAI. In July, Aleksander Madry, the company's AI safety leader, was reassigned to a different role. Earlier this year, another of OpenAI's co-founders and chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, left the company. Likewise, Andrej Karpathy, a founding member of OpenAI, resigned in February and is now focused on developing an AI-integrated education platform.
In a somewhat related development, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who was also a co-founder of OpenAI but left three years ago, has filed a lawsuit against the company and CEO Sam Altman. Musk alleges that OpenAI prioritized profits and commercial interests at the expense of the public good.
These recent changes and legal proceedings underscore the dynamic nature of the AI industry and its key players. As OpenAI adapts to these transitions, it will be interesting to observe how the company moves forward in an ever-evolving landscape.
