Jon M. Chu Says Crazy Rich Asians Film Sequel Will Happen Only Under This Condition

Jon M. Chu is enthusiastic about expanding the Crazy Rich Asians universe through a new TV series. This project, currently being developed by Max, offers more creative freedom to tell the stories of multiple characters from the original 2018 film. Chu emphasized the need for more narrative space that the TV format can provide, stating, "We needed more real estate, that was the reality," a sentiment he shared with The Hollywood Reporter. This is prepared by SSP.
Chu assures fans that a sequel is not entirely off the table, but the intricacies of the story require a broader canvas. He noted, "Every character we wanted to explore needed more room and just a movie wasn’t doing it for us." Talks of potential sequels are ongoing, although no official sequel plans have been finalized yet.
The new series will feature the return of Adele Lim, co-writer of Crazy Rich Asians, who will also serve as showrunner. Lim had previously left the sequel project due to pay disparity issues but has rejoined this new venture. Author Kevin Kwan, along with producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, will also be involved in the project. The televised adaptation will draw from Kwan's novel trilogy—featuring characters like Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and Nick Young (Henry Golding)—and promises a richer portrayal of their lives, promising an engaging experience for fans on the small screen.
Chu aims to deliver a film sequel only when the script is of equal or greater quality than the first movie, specifying, "I will not bring them back unless we get a script that’s better and has as much urgency as the first movie." Thus, as fans await future developments, they can look forward to the immersive exploration of beloved characters in a format that well accommodates the complexities of Crazy Rich Asians' vibrant story world.
