José de la Torre, Netflix Star, Passes Away at 37 Following Illness
The Spanish actor José de la Torre, known for his role in Netflix's "Toy Boy," tragically passed away at the age of 37. Reports indicate that he died on Thursday, Dec. 5. His funeral service took place the following day in Spain, as noted by outlets such as Montilla Digital, Variety, and the New York Post.
The exact cause of death remains undisclosed. However, de la Torre had previously shared on social media in June that he was facing a "serious illness." Following this announcement, he noticeably reduced his public appearances and social media presence, PEOPLE reported.
His last Instagram post came on June 3, where he appeared healthy while celebrating the Barceló Desalia 2024 in the Canary Islands. He shared multiple photos, smiling and enjoying the festivities with friends. Fans expressed their shock over his passing in the comments section. One fan wrote in Spanish, "I can't believe it!! RIP 🕊." Another expressed how young and vibrant he was, stating, "Rest in peace José, and may heaven welcome you with open arms."
Numerous Spanish celebrities offered their condolences. Actress Luisa Martín lamented, "It breaks my heart to think I’ll never hear your voice again, but I’ll keep talking to you. Love you endlessly, José." Singer Pablo Alborán shared his devastation, saying, "I can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m sending kisses to all of your family and friends."
Born in 1987 in Montilla, Córdoba, Spain, de la Torre pursued acting from a young age. He studied at the Higher School of Dramatic Art in Málaga. His breakthrough came with "Toy Boy," which premiered on Netflix in 2019, and he continued with the series until its conclusion in 2021.
His success led to roles in "Vis a Vis: El Oasis" and "Amar es para Siempre." He also enjoyed theatrical experiences, performing in "Cuento de Navidad," directed by Cristina García Pinto, and "Paisaje con Argonautas," directed by Celia Dolci.
