Kate Middleton's Embrace of Bows: A Symbolic Statement
Kate Middleton has prominently featured bows in her wardrobe this year, capturing much attention. After her first appearance following her cancer diagnosis at Trooping the Colour in June, she began incorporating bows of various sizes, colors, and fabrics into her outfits, showcasing a fashionable yet clever styling choice, PEOPLE reported.
"Over the past year, the bow has become her signature accessory," notes Bethan Holt, fashion director at the Telegraph. This accessory has a transformative effect, turning its previous outfits into something entirely fresh. Kate’s look inspired by "My Fair Lady" during the military parade stood out. "It was a safe option but she had fun with it, upcycling it with the bow," Holt adds.
For example, a previously worn white dress with black trim from Jenny Packham was revitalized with a playful striped statement bow at the neckline. "This piece from her wardrobe made her feel comfortable yet stylish," adds Holt.
On a surprise visit to Southport in October, Kate wore a Whistles polka dot dress and transformed the dress's belt into a subtle chic bow at the neck. Furthermore, on Remembrance Sunday in November, she chose a coatdress by Catherine Walker & Co. that was discreetly upgraded to feature a decadent black velvet tie at the collar.
Remembrance Sunday allows the royals to pay tribute to those who have served. Both Prince William and Kate attended the ceremony at the Cenotaph in London, further emphasizing the significance of their styles on such a poignant day.
According to Holt, "Bows have a timeless quality, yet they are backed by a current trend. Kate’s unique flair enhances this style." Although she did not join Prince William at the Earthshot Prize Awards in South Africa, her choice to upcycle with bows sends a strong and sophisticated message.
"Her approach reflects sustainability and demonstrates creativity within her extensive wardrobe," comments Holt. By reimagining old pieces, she effectively transforms her look while promoting sustainable fashion. "A bow stands as an uncomplicated, universal method of achieving this."
Kate also is showcasing budget-friendly fashion. For her annual Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey, she affixed a $25 velvet bow from British retailer Jigsaw onto her cherished red Alexander McQueen coat.
Holt emphasizes that Kate's fashion decisions resonate with Prince William's sustainable fashion messages. "He showcased sustainable clothing in South Africa, and she provides a relatable example: wear existing pieces and add a small accessory for impact," Holt explains.
Kate's recent style choices illustrate a softer, more feminine theme, potentially intentional. "Due to pressing reasons, her public appearances have been minimal, but her reveals this year reflect an authentic portrayal of herself," concludes Holt.
