Kate Middleton's Heartfelt Visit to Hospice Linked to Princess Diana
On January 30, Princess Kate traveled to Wales to visit Tŷ Hafan. This hospice supports children with life-shortening conditions, helping them and their families lead fulfilling lives. Princess Diana, the late mother of Prince William, played a vital role in advocating for Tŷ Hafan before her passing.
During her visit, the princess spent an emotional morning with the children staying at the hospice and their families. She participated in a "stay and play" session where children engaged in meaningful activities with their caregivers. Witnessing Tŷ Hafan’s holistic support, Princess Kate met bereaved families who continue to receive care after their child's passing.
This visit marked Kate’s return to public engagements after recently announcing her cancer remission on January 14. Earlier in the week, she accompanied Prince William to London for a remembrance event honoring Holocaust victims and survivors.
Diana dedicated herself to Tŷ Hafan in 1995, becoming its patron before it broke ground. Her former private secretary, Patrick Jephson, noted that despite its non-existent foundation, Diana enthusiastically accepted the role. The first major fundraiser for the hospice featured opera star Luciano Pavarotti, following Diana’s initiative. Despite her tragic death in 1997, Tŷ Hafan eventually opened its doors 25 years ago, becoming the only children's hospice in Wales.
Jephson remembers Diana's commitment to children with life-threatening conditions, which emphasized her work in end-of-life care worldwide. The mission of Tŷ Hafan embodies her legacy of love in action. Last October, a new sanctuary for families, children, and staff opened, highlighting a continuous connection to Diana's influence.
The renovation was financed by a $130,000 donation from Jephson, following his 2022 damages payout from the BBC related to the 1995 Panorama interview with Diana. Jephson chose Tŷ Hafan as the recipient due to its importance to Diana and its cultural significance.
