Katy Perry Wins Trademark Battle Against Sydney Fashion Designer Katie Taylor

Pop star Katy Perry has won a significant legal victory in her trademark battle against Sydney fashion designer Katie Jane Taylor, who markets her clothing under the name Katie Perry. The dispute began when Taylor filed a lawsuit in October 2019, accusing Perry of infringing her trademark by selling merchandise during Perry's 2014 Australian tour. This is prepared by SSP.

However, on November 22, a panel of three appeals judges overturned an earlier decision that sided with Taylor. They found that Perry had been using her name as a trademark since 2008, five years before Taylor's business started, stemming from the international reputation Perry built following her 2008 hit "I Kissed a Girl." The judges noted that the pop singer was entitled to use her name in Australia and canceled Taylor’s trademark registration.

Before Taylor filed for her trademark in September 2008, Perry had sent a "cease and desist" letter in 2009, proposing a "coexistence agreement," which Taylor declined. The appeals court ruled that Taylor's rejection of this offer contributed to her current legal predicament, stating it’s "unfortunate" they couldn’t return to harmonious existence.

Taylor is heartbroken by the decision that strips her of a trademark she had pursued since 2006, claiming, "This case proves a trademark isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on." Meanwhile, Perry’s legal representatives have not publicly commented on the matter.
