Kay McConaughey Opens Up About Her Marital History
Kay McConaughey, at age 93, shares insights about her unique marital journey with late husband Jim McConaughey. In her recent interview with Austin Lifestyle, she discussed their distinct relationship, which included being married three times and divorced twice over a period of 39 years.
"Not many people can say that," Kay remarked. She recalled having three traditional weddings: one in a Presbyterian church, another in a Catholic church, and a third in a Methodist church.
Before their first marriage, Kay noted that Jim struggled with his decision about marriage. "I met him in college, and we were very close, but he wasn’t sure. I knew he loved me, yet if we didn’t marry, I could return to New York and pursue modeling," she explained.
To resolve his indecision, Kay sent him an invitation to their wedding with a condition: if he failed to show up, their relationship would end. "He did show up, but I don’t think he was ready for marriage at the time, even though I was," she added.
Together, Kay and Jim parented three children: Michael, Patrick, and the famous actor Matthew, who rose to fame in the 1990s. Interestingly, Kay initially did not expect to be pregnant with Matthew. "He was such a surprise that my friend took me to the hospital to have him, and Jim said, ‘I don’t know if that’s my son.’ I replied, ‘Then don’t come and see.’ But he did come, and I asked for his thoughts, to which he quickly accepted," she recalled. "I mean, who else’s baby would it have been?"
Jim passed away in 1992, leading Kay to a long-lasting relationship with businessman Clyde "CJ" Carlig. She affectionately describes him as "my soulmate," noting his kindness and thoughtfulness. Their relationship lasted 17 years until his death from leukemia in 2017.
Interestingly, Kay and CJ never married. "I was just so happy to have two men in my life that I genuinely loved," she reflected.
Matthew, now 55, has also commented on his parents’ complex relationship dynamics. In a 2006 interview with Barbara Walters, he shared that they often joked about their love for each other. "They would say, ‘I love your mother six days a week,’ and my mom echoed similar sentiments about my dad," Matthew explained. "This didn’t imply a lack of love every day. Rather, they understood the importance of personal space within their relationship."
