King Charles and Queen Camilla Arrive in Australia for their First Historic Tour
King Charles and Queen Camilla recently embarked on a historic first tour to Australia, marking Charles’ role as monarch of this Commonwealth Realm. The royal couple, aged 75 and 77 respectively, arrived in a rainy Sydney on October 18th, where they were welcomed by Australia’s Governor-General, Sam Mostyn, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, among others. Displaying a gesture from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Camilla received a flower posy from young Ky and Charlotte while wearing an elegant blue dress and the Australian wattle brooch.
While Charles documented his journey from London on Oct. 17, Camilla had paused for a private break before their shared engagements. In Sydney, their introductory meeting with Albanese took place at Admiralty House before they planned to explore Australia extensively, later heading to Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
Australian republican circles expressed interest in engagements with Charles due to his status as head of state, a position he acquired following Queen Elizabeth’s passing on September 8, 2022. While polls indicate dwindling republican inclinations, reflected in The Times' reported figures, this visit brought an animated curiosity about potential constitutional changes, with a reassuring letter from Charles’ secretary acknowledging the Australian public holds this decision power.
The King's recent personal film expressed enthusiasm about revisiting Australia to celebrate its diverse communities. Accordingly, during their visit, Charles will deal with the topic of sustainability, importantly including a visit to CSIRO for a bushfire discussion, whereas Camilla will focus on literacy and family abuse awareness.
Charles’ activities include meetings with esteemed Australians aiding melanoma sufferers—a conversation stemming from his own cancer battle. Meanwhile, Camilla interacts with young readers and domestic violence forums. Following in his mother Queen Elizabeth's 1954 footsteps, Charles’ visit outlines both historical and contemporary royal acknowledgments within Australia.
