Lainey Wilson Shares Behind-the-Scenes Insights from the ‘Country’s Cool Again’ Tour
In a recent interview with Us Weekly, the singer of "Watermelon Moonshine" discussed how she prepares mentally before she performs. "Whiskey and a prayer — and being silly with my band," said Wilson, age 32. This conversation coincided with the launch of her new Wrangler collection. "We make the most outrageous faces to ease the nerves."
Wilson emphasized the importance of energy exchange on stage. "When we perform, we draw from one another’s energy. Some nights, the crowd is lively, other nights are more subdued, and we rely on each other to elevate the moments."
Her strong affection for her band is evident. This includes lead guitarist Aslan Freeman, drummer Matt Nolan, instrumentalist Kevin Nolan, and bassist Tommy Scifres. She treasures performing "Whirlwind" each night, as it highlights their talents.
"At the end of that song, we showcase a long guitar solo. I love to brag about their talent in that moment," the Grammy-winning artist said. "It’s amazing to perform the new songs we created as a team."
These band members are truly special to her. "They’re badass and geniuses," Wilson remarked, showcasing her admiration.
Her tour essentials consist of "Throat Coat cough drops, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and Coors Light." Wilson has been on tour since 2019, but her standout performance came as a surprise guest. She joined the Rolling Stones during their Hackney Diamonds tour in Chicago last June.
Wilson recalled, "I sang ‘Dead Flowers,’ which was special for both me and my band. The Rolling Stones have influenced all music genres, especially country." She recounted how Mick Jagger personally invited her after seeing her show. "It’s incredible to get his love and support," she added.
When the show ends, Wilson prefers a relaxed afterparty. "There has to be pizza, good friends, and good music," she said. As for her attire choice? "My pajamas," she stated playfully.
Despite the blending of musical styles, Wilson is committed to her roots in country music. "No matter what, whatever accent you put on any type of music, it’s still going to be country," she explained. If given the chance, she desires to collaborate with Miley Cyrus, whom she once impersonated as Hannah Montana.
"She has a vocal quality that echoes country music," Wilson noted. "I’d love to see her join the country scene."
For fans eagerly listening to her latest album but missing out on the Country’s Cool Again tour, there’s good news. She intends to perform the entire record next year.
"I don’t envision slowing down soon," she stated. "We named the record Whirlwind, which fits our trajectory, so the next record will be called Peace."
