This gathering marked the first reunification of the four remaining members since Malik departed from the group in 2015, with the band entering an indefinite hiatus in 2016.
Despite past creative tensions – Malik mentioned in a 2016 interview that he "never really wanted to be there" during his time with One Direction – the bandmates issued a joint statement the day after Payne's death. "We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing," they expressed. "In time, there will be more to say, but for now, we will take some time to grieve."
Liam Payne's funeral stirred heartfelt tributes. The members remarked on the shared memories they would treasure forever. "Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the fans," they noted. Tomlinson expressed feelings of luck for having known Payne but struggled with loss. "We got even closer since the band, but now…" he wrote on Instagram. Styles communicated his deep devastation over the loss, emphasizing that Payne found joy in making others happy.

Payne’s legacy includes his 7-year-old son Bear, with ex Cheryl Cole. At the time of his death, he was dating influencer Kate Cassidy. Cassidy called Payne her "angel" in a touching Instagram tribute. "I will continue to love you for the rest of my life," she shared.
