Martha Stewart's Future Aspirations on SNL
Martha Stewart remains enthusiastic about hosting Saturday Night Live. Recently, she appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, expressing her continued desire to be on the iconic show. At 83, Stewart shared a story from her past that kept her from the opportunity.
During her conversation with Fallon on January 27, Stewart stated she nearly hosted SNL when her parole officer prevented her from accepting the invitation. She explained, "They asked me as I was coming out of Alderson — that camp that I was in for a while." This comment referred to her time at Alderson Federal Prison in 2004.
Fallon inquired about this hindrance, to which she noted, "I was allowed to be out of my house eight hours a day." However, her parole officer restricted her, leading to disappointment. Stewart humorously added, "That b------." Despite the setback, she noted with some frustration, "Maybe someday."
"You would be fantastic," Fallon said, encouraging Stewart to consider the opportunity. Stewart responded confidently, "Oh I would. I’d be amazing ... start a campaign!" Her humor echoed a desire that remains strong, reflecting her fortitude.
In 2004, Stewart was sentenced to five months in prison combined with two years of supervised probation for charges like conspiracy and obstruction of justice after her ImClone Systems stock sale controversy. She completed her sentence in March 2005.
Although she missed out on hosting, Stewart rebounded remarkably soon after her release. She published a new book and launched two television shows within less than a year. During the interview, Fallon pointed out that she had become "one of the most impersonated people" on SNL. Alums like Amy Poehler and Kate McKinnon had famously imitated her.
Stewart revealed her fondness for the impersonations, stating, "I love it! Imitation is the highest form of flattery." She specifically expressed her admiration for David Spade's portrayal, noting, "He was wearing my poncho" during his skits. Each remark highlighted the positive outcome stemming from her inadvertent barriers and solidified her appeal as a cultural icon.
