Meghan Markle Shares Thanksgiving Traditions and Celebrity Guest
In 2023, Meghan Markle revealed that feminist icon Gloria Steinem joined her family for Thanksgiving. This celebration took place at Markle's Montecito home, shared with Prince Harry, their son Prince Archie, and daughter Princess Lilibet.
Meghan, during an interview with Marie Claire, explained that they maintain an "open-door" policy for friends during holidays. She emphasized the importance of having friends who may not have family to spend the holiday with. "I was thinking about, in the past few years of having Thanksgiving here," she remarked, noting that it’s crucial to have "room at the table" for them.
Thanksgiving with the Sussex family is typically "pretty low-key." Meghan appreciates living close to her mother, Doria Ragland, which enhances their family gatherings. The holiday involves enjoying a great meal and participating in fun activities, she shared. "Someone brings a guitar," she added.
Meghan expressed her joy about how the holidays evolve as the children grow older. Now that Archie and Lilibet are three and five, she feels they can appreciate the festivities more. "At first, I enjoyed having them there, but they didn’t understand everything," she explained. From her perspective, the magic of traditions like special recipes helps create formative memories for her children during holidays.
Every holiday provides a "new adventure" for the Sussex family, she stated. Meghan described making Christmas special by putting out "carrots for the reindeer" as part of their traditions.
In a past conversation with her friend Ellen DeGeneres, Meghan shared her excitement for hosting Thanksgiving. "I love to cook," she remarked, explaining they planned to relax and enjoy their time together at home in California. DeGeneres playfully inquired about arrival time, highlighting their close community.
Reflecting on her first Thanksgiving in 2016, when she cooked a perfect turkey, Meghan had previously shared a nostalgic Instagram post. In it, she asked if she could recreate the success.
Meghan's upbringing instilled a focus on giving back, noting her parents' dedication to giving to those in need. "They would buy turkeys for homeless shelters at Thanksgiving," she recalled. This upbringing influenced her social consciousness, encouraging her to always speak up for what is right.
