Mena Massoud Reflects on Industry Challenges as He Celebrates New Film
Mena Massoud is sharing insights into his experiences in the film industry as he promotes his latest project in Julia Stiles' directorial debut, Wish You Were Here. The actor, now 33, spoke with PEOPLE at a screening in New York City and discussed the significant shift in his mindset since gaining fame. This change follows the success of Aladdin, where he faced challenges in securing auditions.
Massoud expresses that the change in perspective has been essential. "I think it's a mentality shift more than anything," he elaborates. He emphasizes that viewing experiences through a negative or positive lens can affect creative journeys. "You mature as you go through this industry," he continues, recognizing the fortunate position he holds in his acting career. He adds that embracing passion in one’s work is what truly matters.
In Wish You Were Here, Massoud stars alongside Isabelle Fuhrman, Jennifer Grey, and Kelsey Grammer. He describes the film as a "fascinating movie" about exploring love amid life's challenges. Massoud notes, "These kinds of movies aren't really made that often anymore." His excitement extends to his role as Adam, a character facing a life-altering truth and seeking beauty in adversity.
Massoud praises Stiles’ directorial prowess as "the queen of these kinds of films." He feels a profound respect for her expertise. "I wanted to learn as much as I could from her," he explains, highlighting his eagerness to cultivate his craft alongside talented co-stars. "Everything kind of lined up," he adds appreciatively.
Reflecting on his past experiences, Massoud recalls his remarks in a 2019 interview, where he expressed frustration at the lack of auditions post-Aladdin. He revealed that, despite the film's success, he struggled to secure new opportunities. His Middle Eastern heritage sometimes positioned him as a "wild card" in casting discussions favoring other demographics. "Can I just get in the room? … Can you just give me a chance?" he queried at that time.
Since those challenges, Massoud has embraced various roles, including projects like Netflix's The Royal Treatment in 2022 and the 2023 horror film The Sacrifice Game. Now, he promotes Wish You Were Here, which has just been released.
When asked about guidance he’d offer his younger self as an actor, Massoud conveys the importance of starting young. "There's such an advantage to doing that," he shares while admiring Julia and Isabelle. He acknowledges that his journey into professional acting took some time and advises, "I would tell myself to maybe go for it a little sooner." However, he reflects positively, stating, "I think everything happens for a reason."
