Miley Cyrus Prefers to Avoid "Family Drama" Regarding Brother's Concerns About Their Dad
Miley Cyrus is choosing to remain detached from recent family tensions. A source has shared with PEOPLE that the 32-year-old singer aims to avoid conflicts as her brother, Trace Cyrus, has raised concerns regarding their father, Billy Ray Cyrus, after his recent performance at a political event.
"Miley used to feel overwhelmed by the family drama," the insider states. "She worked hard to remove herself and intends not to get involved again." The source emphasizes that "she's in a great place now. She's thriving and looking out for herself." This comes as Miley is nominated for an award at the upcoming 2025 Grammys for her contributions to Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter album.
In recent interviews, Miley has been open about her complicated relationship with her father. During her candid appearance on David Letterman's Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction in June 2024, she reflected on the positive and negative aspects she learned from Billy Ray, who is 63. Later, in a November 2024 Harper's Bazaar cover story, Miley acknowledged their collaborative history, saying, "I worked with my dad forever."
Regarding her relationship with her mother, Tish Cyrus, a source tells that they share a strong bond. "She has a great relationship with her mom. She’s happy her mom is doing well too."
The recent family drama ignited after Billy Ray’s performance at The Liberty Ball during Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20. His show was marred by technical difficulties while he performed "Achy Breaky Heart" and his Lil Nas X collaboration "Old Town Road."
Soon after, Billy Ray expressed his pride in performing at the event, describing it as an "honor" in an exclusive PEOPLE statement. He reiterated this sentiment in an Instagram post on January 22.
A source highlighted that Billy Ray has been concerned about changes in his voice. They noted that performing at the Trump event placed him in a vulnerable position.
On January 22, Trace shared an emotional letter via Instagram, raising alarms about their father’s wellbeing. He wrote, "It seems this world has beaten you down, and it’s obvious to everyone but you." Trace indicated that Miley, Noah, and Brandi Cyrus are "genuinely worried" about their dad, who has become distant. He commented, "We are all hanging on to memories of the man we once knew, hoping he returns."
In the letter, Trace urged his father to seek help, expressing a willingness to support him. "You know how to reach me. Till that day comes, I will continue to pray for you," he concluded.
Despite recent turmoil, a source mentioned that Miley, her siblings, and mother wish to move forward. "They got through the drama of 2024, and it’s a new year," the insider stated. "Miley, Noah, Braison, and Tish don’t want to be part of this Cyrus family feud. This is not enjoyable for them."
