Nick Cannon Discusses Narcissistic Personality Disorder Diagnosis
Nick Cannon is currently addressing his mental health after being diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder. The 44-year-old host of "The Masked Singer" shared his diagnosis during a candid discussion with Dr. Cheyenne Bryant on the November 8 episode of his podcast, "Counsel Culture." He disclosed that he underwent clinical assessments to arrive at this conclusion, US Weekly reported.
In a recent interview with People, Cannon elaborated on how the disorder impacts his life. "I still don’t understand it all the way, but I kind of always wanted to get tested for it," he stated. Furthermore, he has received a diagnosis of ADHD and has dealt with dyslexia since childhood. Understanding that he is neurodivergent has always resonated with him.
Cannon expressed how he identifies with many of the characteristics of narcissistic personality disorder. He stressed the importance of accepting his diagnosis while working on his personal growth. "There are so many labels out there," he acknowledged, "but embracing it is vital. I’m healing. I need help. Show me."
His strong belief in mental health and therapy drives his commitment to being an example for others. He emphasized that healing is a personal journey that can inspire those facing similar challenges.
The Mayo Clinic describes narcissistic personality disorder as a condition characterized by an inflated sense of self-importance. This disorder can negatively impact personal relationships, work life, and financial stability. In his podcast, Cannon stated that he has reframed his understanding of narcissism, allowing himself to research and comprehend its implications. "Call me whatever you want… understanding it takes away the power of the term," he explained.
Cannon also opened up about his past insecurities during his marriage to Mariah Carey. They married in 2008 and share twins Moroccan and Monroe, now 13. Reflecting on this period, he admitted feelings of inadequacy while being married to someone with such immense fame.
He explained, "I didn’t really care what the world thought, but personally, I felt pressure. I married a global superstar." He revealed how daunting it felt to step out of the shadow of Carey’s fame and questioned his identity during this time.
Despite enjoying comfortable living conditions, Cannon pondered if his life genuinely fulfilled his personal goals. "Living a comfortable life while she maintained an incredible career made me self-reflect," he noted.
Cannon admitted, "I became too comfortable with the lifestyle." He humorously described scenarios where his daily routine became unchallenging, indicating aspects of his identity had faded. "I felt like I wasn’t being the man I was meant to be," he said.
