Nick Lachey Discusses 'Scars' from Charity with Jessica Simpson: ‘I Understand the Hurt’
Nick Lachey, who was married to Jessica Simpson from 2002 to 2006, opened up about their separation on the third season of "The Ultimatum." Lachey, now 51, shared his insights into the pain of divorce during a conversation with a contestant on the Netflix show, released on December 4.
"I, too, was previously married and divorced, so I understand the hurt and the scars that exist from that," Lachey expressed to E! News. His comments resonate deeply after his split from Simpson in 2006. He added, "Don’t let your past define your future," emphasizing the show's focus on couples navigating new relationships.
Regarding his marriage to Vanessa Lachey, he remarked, "What I truly always wanted was a beautiful marriage and family. If I hadn’t held onto that belief, I wouldn’t have realized the wonderful life I have with this woman."
Lachey and Simpson, 44, first met at the Hollywood Christmas Parade in 1998. They reconnected a month later at a Teen PEOPLE party in Florida, which led to their relationship. The couple wed in 2002 before starring in the MTV reality series "Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica," showcasing their wedding in the opening credits.
In November 2005, they announced their split, and Simpson filed for divorce the following month. The divorce was finalized in 2006. Since that time, Simpson has married former NFL player Eric Johnson, and they share three children: daughter Maxwell "Maxi" Drew, 12, son Ace Knute, 11, and daughter Birdie Mae, 5.
Nick Lachey has also expanded his family with wife Vanessa, 44, with whom he shares sons Camden, 12, and Phoenix, 7, along with daughter Brooklyn, 9.
