Nicole Kidman Honors Late Mother at Palm Springs Award Ceremony
Nicole Kidman recently dedicated her award for the film "Babygirl" to her late mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, who passed away in September 2024. Kidman emotionally acknowledged her mother during the ceremony on January 3, where she received the 2025 Palm Springs International Film Festival's international star award from Jamie Lee Curtis.
Thanking Halina Reijn, the filmmaker behind "Babygirl," Kidman expressed that she is "still grieving" her mother’s loss. Tearfully, she dedicated the award to her mother, mentioning how she was previously unable to do so at the Venice Film Festival. "Thank you for giving me the chance to say, 'This is for my mom,'" Kidman stated, receiving enthusiastic applause. She emphasized the importance of her parents in her career—"My whole career has been for my mom and my dad, who are not here now," she said, pledging to continue her work in appreciation of the film community.
Feeling overwhelmed, she apologized for her tears, saying, "But I feel my mom right now so this is for you." Kidman had missed screenings of "Babygirl" in Venice and Toronto to support her family after her mother's passing. Following the ceremony, she and her sister, Antonia Kidman, expressed gratitude for the support from fans, stating that every message has meant a lot during their time of mourning.
In the months leading up to the ceremony, Kidman and Curtis collaborated on an upcoming Prime Video series titled
"Scarpetta," where they will star as sisters. This project is based on the novels by Patricia Cornwell, with both women serving as executive producers.
Kidman received the award for her performance in "Babygirl," in which she stars alongside Harris Dickinson and Antonio Banderas. Furthermore, her role is nominated at the Golden Globe Awards airing January 5. Festival chairman Nachhattar Singh Chandi praised Kidman, recognizing her talent for portraying bold roles. "Nicole Kidman showcases her unmatched talent with remarkable ease," he noted regarding Kidman's role as a CEO navigating a dark affair.
"Babygirl" is currently in theaters, along with other honorees at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, including Adrien Brody and Ralph Fiennes.
