Olympic Swimmer Ryan Murphy and Bridget Welcome Their First Baby
Olympic swimmer Ryan Murphy and his wife, Bridget Konttinen Murphy, are new parents! They announced the arrival of their first child, daughter Eevi Lillian Murphy, on Wednesday, January 29. Eevi was born on Friday, January 24.
Ryan Murphy, a nine-time Olympic medalist, shared a heartfelt Instagram carousel featuring five pictures of their newborn. Eevi weighed 9 lbs 8 oz and measured 22 inches long, as the couple disclosed.
The caption read, "Family of 3." The couple explained that Eevi is "a name of Finnish origin meaning ‘life.’" One of the images depicted Eevi asleep, with her hands held by both parents. Another photo showed Bridget in the hospital, cradling Eevi and kissing Ryan.
Additional pictures included Eevi snuggled in a pink blanket and a snapshot of her awake in her car seat. They finished the carousel with a lovely picture of Bridget holding Eevi while sitting in her hospital bed.
Fellow Olympic swimmers congratulated the couple in the comments. Abbey Weitzeil said, "Eevi, she’s beautiful, congrats you guys!!." Olivia Smoliga added, "Congratulations ." Katie McLaughlin commented, "Congratulations! She’s so precious 💕💕." Olympian Caeleb Dressel's wife, Meghan, expressed, "Congratulations Mom and Dad. She is so perfect 🤍✨."
Bridget revealed they were expecting a girl during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, right after Ryan secured a bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke on July 29. In the stands, Bridget held a sign that said, "Ryan it’s a girl!" Later, she and Ryan shared a kiss and a hug in the stands.
His mother, Katy, shared with PEOPLE on July 31 that the reveal "was a very last minute" decision. "She had this idea and conveyed it to us; we quickly agreed," Katy said.
In February 2024, Ryan told about how Bridget’s unwavering support has fueled his success. "She's played a huge role in my achievements over the years," he stated. "I believe she motivates me about life."
