Paul Mescal Says He Lied About His Driving Skills to Get the Role in Normal People
Paul Mescal's lack of a driver's license did not prevent him from landing the role of Connell in the Hulu series "Normal People." The 28-year-old actor confessed to W Magazine that he had lied about his driving skills to secure the role. He humorously admitted: "I said I could drive for Normal People, and I could not drive. We'd signed the paperwork, I'd gotten the part, and then I'd forgotten about doing my driver's license." Consequently, Mescal had to perform on set with only a provisional license, requiring the presence of a fully licensed driver beside him. Though he humorously claimed to have done the "best driving" ever recorded on-screen for the show, the lie proved advantageous. This is prepared by SSP.
Based on Sally Rooney's best-selling novel, "Normal People" follows the nuanced relationship between Marianne, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Connell, as portrayed by Mescal, during their high school and college years. The chemistry between the costars translated beyond the screen, with subsequent reunions at various events, including Glastonbury Festival and the Met Gala. Edgar-Jones, in a conversation with Variety, lauded Mescal as "one of my lifetime best friends," acknowledging his grounded character and their meaningful friendship since their first meeting when she was 20 and he was 22. The series, which has resonated with many for its compelling portrayal of youthful romance, is available for streaming on Hulu.
