Pregnant Olympic Surfer Carissa Moore Plans to Introduce Her Daughter to Surfing
Carissa Moore, the Olympic gold medalist, is expecting her first child, a girl, with husband Luke Untermann.
Moore made history by winning a gold medal in surfing at the 2020 Tokyo Games and achieving fifth place at the Paris Games this year. Shortly after her participation in the 2024 Games, she announced her pregnancy, revealing that she was surfing for two.
"I can't wait to tell my daughter one day she was in the barrel with me at the Olympics," Moore shared with PEOPLE at the premiere of Cirque Du Soleil’s 'Auana'. She hopes her daughter will share her passion for surfing.
When asked how soon she plans to get her daughter on a surfboard, Moore, a Hawaii native, replied, "Probably start off with some swimming first. I believe my dad got us in the water after a couple of months, so as soon as possible, really."
Expected to give birth in February, Moore showcased her baby bump during the event at Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel in Hawaii. If the premiere occurred a few months later, she mentioned they might have brought their little one along.
"I'm looking forward to just having a mini with us everywhere and showing her the world," Moore explained. She hopes her daughter will fall in love with surfing, just as she did growing up. "The adventures are going to be even more special."
Changes extend beyond her body; her cravings are shifting. "I've always had a sweet tooth, but since getting pregnant, cravings switched to savory. Cheese is my new obsession," she admitted.
In January, the five-time world champion and first Olympic surfing gold medalist announced her decision to step back from her competitive career, though "retirement" is not how she defines her path forward.
"I don’t like the word retirement," Moore emphasized. "I prefer saying it's a departure from the tour, or switching gears, or evolving."
Looking ahead, Moore expressed her eagerness to start a family with Untermann, but she wanted to first compete in The World Surf League championship and the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
"Surfing is a part of who I am, and it always will be. This isn’t the end," she said in her Instagram announcement back in August.
