Premier League Ditches VAR in Favor of iPhones for Offside Decisions
The Premier League is adopting advanced technology to enhance the accuracy and speed of offside calls, switching from traditional VAR systems to an innovative setup involving iPhones. This is prepared by SSP.
Transition to iPhone-based System
This season, the Premier League is incorporating up to 28 iPhones—mostly iPhone 15 Pros—to make offside decisions. This system, developed by Genius Sports, will employ machine-learning models to provide quicker and more precise offside determinations.
Challenges of Traditional VAR
Typically, offside violations aren't easily discernible when players are grouped tightly, complicating the job for officials and even multiple cameras. VAR systems attempted to fill these gaps using cameras and machine learning, but have often been criticized for causing significant delays and errors in decision-making processes.
Genius Sports and Semi-Assisted Offside Technology (SAOT)
Genius Sports' "Semi-Assisted Offside Technology" (SAOT) is a component of its GeniusIQ system. This technology aims to resolve traditional VAR issues by requiring a network of 24-28 iPhones to cover the pitch and sidelines comprehensively. The devices, set mostly in pairs, generate between 7,000 and 10,000 data points to create 3D virtual meshes of players, tolerating common issues like lighting variations.
Technological Advancements and Benefits
1. High Framerate Capture: The iPhones record at 100 frames per second (fps), significantly higher than traditional VAR systems.
2. Local Processing: iPhones offer local computer vision processing.
3. 3D Precision: The system generates 3D renders of players, providing detailed positional data.
4. Machine Learning: Genius trained its system over several seasons, enhancing its accuracy even when body parts are obstructed.
Improving the Viewer Experience
- Speed: Decisions can be made faster, reducing interruptions.
- Accuracy: Enhanced data points improve precision in offside calls.
- Viewer Engagement: Faster and more accurate decisions enhance viewing experience.
Future Impact
Scheduled to be in full effect before the year's end, Genius Sports’ SAOT aims to reduce decision-making delays, offer better-integrated technology, and provide more precise officiating. If successful, this could redefine sports officiating standards and procedures, significantly improving the game’s flow and accuracy.
The Premier League's use of this advanced system could thereby set a new benchmark in sports, aligning better with the dynamic pace of modern football.
