Prince William Visits the Hospital Where Kate Middleton Was Born to Highlight Healthcare Charity Efforts

The Prince of Wales, as Patron of NHS Charities Together, visited the Royal Berkshire Hospital on March 5, 2025. He aimed to showcase the charity's impact since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, PEOPLE reported.
This visit marked a somber occasion, being five years since the pandemic began. Prince William returned to honor a healthcare charity that supports both staff and patients. The Royal Berkshire Hospital holds significant meaning for the prince; it is the birthplace of his wife, Kate Middleton, and was the site of the U.K.’s first COVID-19 death in March 2020.
NHS Charities Together raised substantial funds to address urgent requirements during the pandemic. Initially, the organization garnered over $19 million (£15 million) in the first five days of their appeal that began in March 2020. Over time, the charity amassed $200 million (£160 million) to benefit patients and healthcare workers confronting the crisis.

During his visit, William engaged with both staff and patients, assessing the deployment of charity resources. Reports indicate that two-thirds of NHS staff received assistance for counseling, rest spaces, and community initiatives. Over 90 percent of the funded projects, including the Oasis Health and Wellbeing Centre and Garden, continue to thrive at local hospitals.
On March 5, William toured the facility, visiting the wellbeing center and its garden. He interacted with various individuals utilizing the center, as well as hospital workers who contributed throughout the pandemic. By seeing the initiatives in action, he gained insight into the mental health resources available for staff.

Additionally, the visit highlighted the somber human toll of the pandemic. The hospital had to deal with the loss of team members Dr. Peter Tun and nurse Julie Edward, whose memories are honored with marked trees in the garden.
NHS Charities Together, with contributions from Kate Middleton as a patron, has been integral in establishing one of the nation's initial Long Covid Clinics. This initiative helps individuals struggling with the prolonged effects of the virus, further underscoring the charity’s commitment to healthcare and well-being throughout upheaval.
