Queen Camilla Withdraws from Remembrance Events Due to Chest Infection
On November 5, Buckingham Palace announced that Queen Camilla is ill shortly after returning from a royal tour in Australia and Samoa with King Charles. Following the onset of a chest infection, she will not participate in key Remembrance events this weekend.
King Charles is expected to lead royal family members at the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall in London. This event honors the British and Commonwealth Armed Forces and those who have sacrificed their lives. However, the 77-year-old Queen Camilla's absence was confirmed in a statement from the palace on November 9.
The official statement stated, "Following doctors’ guidance to ensure a full recovery from a seasonal chest infection, and to protect others, Her Majesty will not attend this weekend's Remembrance events." Despite her disappointment, she will mark the occasion privately and anticipates returning to public duties early next week.
Sources at PEOPLE indicate there is no cause for alarm regarding Camilla's health. She is resting at Ray Mill in Wiltshire. Concerned about potentially spreading any lingering infection, the Queen decided against attending, believing it might hinder her recovery.
When the palace provided updates on the family members attending the services on November 8, Queen Camilla's name was notably absent. Earlier, on November 5, an announcement revealed her illness: "Her Majesty The Queen is currently unwell with a chest infection, and her doctors have advised a short period of rest." The palace expressed regret, stating that she hoped to recover in time for the events and apologized for any inconvenience caused.
While Queen Camilla recuperates at home under her doctors' care, two other family members filled in for her. On November 7, Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester, represented the Queen at the Field of Remembrance event at Westminster Abbey, supporting The Poppy Factory charity, of which the Queen is a patron. That same day, King Charles hosted a reception for British athletes who earned medals at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympic Games, attending the event solo.
The Festival of Remembrance remains a significant royal family tradition. This year, appearances are expected from King Charles, the Prince and Princess of Wales, Prince Edward, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, Princess Anne, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, and other royals. Notably, the Princess of Wales' presence is highly anticipated, marking her first major event since completing chemotherapy treatment.
This year has posed challenges for the royal family, with King Charles also diagnosed with cancer and commencing treatment since February. Recently, he and Queen Camilla returned from a lengthy nine-day tour in Australia and Samoa, where it was mentioned he would "pause" his cancer treatment.
