Rachel Zegler Discussed Backlash Over Snow White Remake

Rachel Zegler has shared her thoughts on the backlash regarding her role in Disney's live-action remake of Snow White.
Zegler recognizes that she cannot please everyone. She acknowledges the criticisms following her announcement as Snow White in the 2021 remake of the classic 1937 animated film.
In an interview with Vogue Mexico, published on February 24, the 23-year-old actress stated, "I interpret people's feelings about this film as passion for it. What an honor to be part of something people care so much about. We're not all going to share the same feelings, and we can only do our best."

The West Side Story star, who is of Colombian descent, faced racist criticism after her casting. Many fans felt her representation did not align with traditional views of Snow White. This issue mirrors what Halle Bailey encountered when cast as Ariel in The upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.
For Rachel, the backlash has fueled her excitement about the role. She highlighted the positive impact of Halle's casting by reflecting on her own childhood experience with Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Zegler felt a connection with Belle due to her brown hair.
"In those movies, it was hard to find characters that looked like us," Rachel remarked. "Now, seeing Halle as Ariel has been such a beautiful moment for Black girls worldwide."

Alongside her appearance-based backlash, Zegler faced scrutiny due to comments she made in 2022 about the film's plot, particularly where she described the prince as someone who "stalked" Snow White. While the film contains classic elements, Zegler emphasizes a modern interpretation with a greater message.
"It’s important for audiences to know that Disney has found a beautiful balance between the animated classic beloved from 1937 and its introduction to a new generation," she explained.
Zegler also stated, "Her superpower is her heart. Snow White's abilities stem from her love for humanity and all creatures, and she believes in the goodness of everything. That's something the world could truly benefit from."
