Randall Park Reveals How Daughter's Autism Diagnosis Changed His Worldview

Randall Park deeply cherishes his daughter, Ruby. The Residence star, age 51, shares how Ruby, at 12 years old and on the autism spectrum, has transformed his outlook on life. "Ruby completely changed my perspective, and it has been for the best," Randall states. He admits, "Before her, I was self-centered. Now, my focus is entirely on Ruby. I am obsessed with her. She brings immense joy daily." Ruby is described as always singing, laughing, and running around. Despite having sensory issues and limited verbal skills, her vibrant spirit shines through. This is prepared by SSP.
Upon learning about Ruby's diagnosis, Randall felt an instinctual urge. He wondered, "What can we do to help her fit into this world?" His journey has also led him to work with KultureCity. This organization promotes acceptance and inclusion for individuals with "invisible disabilities." He aims for Ruby to thrive in a compassionate and accepting environment.
Randall and his wife, Jae Suh Park, engage in various creative activities with Ruby, including baking and painting. "She’s such a happy kid," Randall shares. "She gives us so much joy." He adds that Ruby enjoys arts and crafts, and has a designated space for her art supplies, where she can express herself freely. Randall reminisces about using art as therapy during his childhood. He believes it serves the same purpose for Ruby.
"She processes things differently than I did," he explains. "Focusing on drawing a rainbow or a smiley face likely brings her comfort and joy."
For parents of children on the autism spectrum, Randall emphasizes that it is a spectrum with diverse expressions. He advises against the pursuit of perfection in parenting. "You’re not going to get everything right all the time," he advises. "That’s okay. Your love and respect for your child are what truly matter."
Following the loss of his father to cancer, Randall reflects on the changes he’s made in his life. "I want to stay healthy for Ruby," he expresses. Feeling motivated, he began training for and completed his first marathon in November in New York City. This idea had not occurred to him until he approached his 50s. "You want to set goals and show that you can still accomplish tough challenges at any age," Randall says. "That became my new inspiration."
Currently, The Residence is streaming on Netflix, while Watson airs Sundays on CBS at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
