Reese Witherspoon Reflects on Jury Duty Experience After "Legally Blonde"
Reese Witherspoon recently revisited her jury experience reminiscent of "Legally Blonde" on "The Graham Norton Show," PEOPLE reported. The actress shared her surprise after being selected for jury duty. "I definitely did not want to do jury duty," she told Graham Norton. "After 'Legally Blonde,' I recall getting called in Beverly Hills, around seven years later."
Witherspoon explained her initial thoughts, "I thought, ‘Surely they’re not gonna pick me.’ But they did, for a two-week trial." Will Ferrell, a guest on the show, chimed in about the trial length. With a laugh, Witherspoon replied, "Okay, Ferrell. It was two solid weeks every day."
During her service, Witherspoon sat on a dog bite case. "I was very invested in this case," she remarked, highlighting her daily attendance and the significant deliberation that followed. Ultimately, the jury elected her as foreman. "They all unanimously picked me," Witherspoon recalled in amusement, pointing to herself in disbelief.
Surprisingly, the jury assumed she was qualified because of her role in "Legally Blonde." Witherspoon responded, "I definitely did not go to law school, I didn’t finish college." She added, "They don’t know much about the law." Despite her humor, she emphasized the importance of participating in jury duty.
Throughout the trial, Witherspoon noted how jurors made biased judgments based on appearances. In one case, a woman was viewed as guilty due, in part, to negative impressions. According to Witherspoon, "This other lady put her hand in a dog fight." She quoted a well-known advice: "What did your mother always tell you, don’t put your hand in a dog fight?"
Her experience emphasizes the real-world implications and responsibilities that come with serving on a jury. It also sheds light on deeper societal perceptions that can color decisions during trials.
