Reporters Apologize After Interrupting Babyface’s Grammys Interview for Chappell Roan
During a live interview with the Associated Press, Babyface faced an unexpected interruption. The incident occurred on February 2, outside the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, PEOPLE reported.
At 65, Babyface, the renowned singer-songwriter, was engaging with AP reporters Leslie Ambriz and Krysta Fauria when the interruption happened. In the middle of his interview, Fauria recognized Chappell Roan, a nominee for Best New Artist. Rather than continuing the conversation with Edmonds, Fauria leaned in and shouted, "Chappell, Chappell!" while speaking over him.
Seeing the chaos, Edmonds smiled and responded, "Go do that." He graciously stepped aside, allowing the reporters to focus on Roan, the "Pink Pony Club" singer.
Following the incident, PEOPLE contacted Edmonds' representatives for his thoughts, but there was no immediate response. The situation drew criticism on social media, with fans deeming the reporters' behavior disrespectful toward Edmonds.
Khloé Kardashian expressed her sentiments on X, posting a clip of the exchange. She stated, "This is so disrespectful how Babyface was treated in this interview. It’s maddening to see a LEGEND not get the respect they deserve." Kardashian described Edmonds as a "class act" and emphasized the importance of respect in interactions, regardless of one's status.
Dionne Warwick echoed similar frustrations online, sharing the video with a caption. She noted, "13x Grammy Award-winning Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds? Am I seeing this correctly?" Including a definition of "decorum," she tagged the AP, highlighting her displeasure regarding the incident.
After the incident circulated, the Associated Press issued a statement via X. They expressed grave concern over the on-air interruption, acknowledging, "We are deeply sorry for cutting our interview with Babyface short on our YouTube livestream of the Grammys red carpet." They confirmed they had apologized to Edmonds’s representative as well as to their livestream audience.
Additionally, Fauria offered a personal apology later during the livestream. She stated, "First I wanted to say that I’m really sorry about interrupting Babyface earlier. Chappell Roan had come up, and there was a lot of commotion on the carpet. Being a big Babyface fan, I just wanted to say that."
