Rob Lowe Shares His Deep Interest in His Sons' Relationships

Rob Lowe, the 61-year-old actor, has candidly revealed his intense interest in his sons' love lives. He has two sons, Matthew, age 31, and John, age 29, with his wife, Sheryl Berkoff. This fascination stems from his desire to become a grandfather.

"I have a probably overly inappropriate interest in my sons' love lives," Lowe told AARP The Magazine for their April/May cover story. He expressed enthusiasm with, "It better happen!"

In a September interview with PEOPLE, Lowe recounted a "brutal" moment when he, Sheryl, and Matthew moved him to Duke University for his freshman year.

"It brought up a lot of stuff, and I wondered why it affected me so deeply," he shared. Sheryl appeared less impacted by the situation. However, Lowe felt overwhelmingly emotional, stating, "I was like a puddle."

"I wore dark glasses on the plane because tears streamed down my face the whole time," he confessed. "I couldn’t look at him in his little seat with his book bag...It’s triggering."

By June 2024, Lowe told PEOPLE the "beauty of fatherhood" involves reliving his childhood through his sons. "You experience their wonder and awe and all those amazing things," he explained.

As his sons transition to adulthood, he appreciates being able to offer guidance on significant choices. "With first houses, significant others, and jobs, the stakes are way higher," he added. "I'm glad to be around to contribute my two cents for what it's worth."
