Ryan Reynolds Is Writing a New Movie to Reunite With Hugh Jackman — But It Won’t Be ‘Deadpool’
The creative duo is coming back together!
Following the success of "Deadpool & Wolverine" this summer, Ryan Reynolds has announced he is writing a new movie that will feature Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy. However, the exciting news comes with a twist: This project will not be a sequel to "Deadpool."
"I’m spending the year writing," Reynolds stated during a podcast interview with Variety, which will air this week. "I’m writing a movie for myself, Hugh, and Shawn that is not Marvel."
"Deadpool & Wolverine" marked Reynolds and Jackman’s entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Disney bought 20th Century Fox in 2019. The film has gathered considerable attention and grossed over $1 billion globally since its release in July. The success explains Reynolds’ eagerness to collaborate with Jackman and Levy again.
While promoting the latest Marvel blockbuster, their tight friendship became evident. Reynolds shared that his children—James, 9, Inez, 8, Betty, 5, and Olin—call Jackman "Uncle Hugh." He told "Extra", "They’re all kind of in love with Uncle Hugh over here, so that worked out pretty well." Reynolds humorously added that Betty once "attacked" Jackman backstage, claiming claws.
On social media, Reynolds hinted at his desire to continue working with Jackman. On Jackman’s 56th birthday in October, he shared a heartfelt post on Instagram. "I hope we get to do this til we’re 90," Reynolds wrote alongside photos of the two. "Happy Birthday, @thehughjackman. A lot of years. A lot of adventures."
Reynolds also maintains a strong partnership with "Deadpool 3" director Shawn Levy. Together, they worked on "Free Guy" and "The Adam Project." During the promotion for their latest film, Levy mentioned his unique connection to the Reynolds family. "Little by little, all of the Reynoldses started being a part of the movie, including their youngest," Levy shared in August, explaining that he is Olin’s godfather. "As the proud godfather of Olin, that might be my favorite voice cameo."
In "Deadpool & Wolverine," Olin appears briefly as Babypool, while his sister Inez plays Kidpool. Blake Lively makes a masked appearance as Lady Deadpool. Additionally, Betty receives credit in the film as Jackman’s "wrangler."
