Selena Gomez Discusses Navigating Isolation in Hollywood with Positivity and Support
Selena Gomez, who recently received a nomination for the best supporting actress at the Golden Globe Awards for her role in Emilia Perez, is savoring her success with gratitude. Sharing insights in an interview with PEOPLE, Gomez expressed being "overwhelmed, honored, and grateful" and remarked, "I can't wait to see what happens." At the notable event, a luncheon held at Los Angeles' Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, she was seated beside fellow nominee Ariana Grande, both of whom rose to fame from their time as child stars—Gomez on Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place and Grande on Nickelodeon's Victorious. In her keynote speech during the luncheon, Gomez articulated her understanding of the isolating nature of the entertainment business but emphasized the importance of solidarity: "I know firsthand how isolating this industry will feel at times," she shared. A moment of unity and friendship among peers, illustrated by her gesture toward fellow attendees like Rihanna, Amy Adams, and Gal Gadot, reassured her that none are truly alone.
On facing negativity, Gomez highlighted using humor as a positive coping mechanism, explaining, "It's humor for me. I know people say it's a defense mechanism, however, I think it's a great distraction from all of the noise sometimes." She invited young women feeling isolated to reach out to her at events, noting, "I'm usually on my phone, playing some sort of weird game. Just come up to me, and I'll be happy to chat." Gomez underscored the impact of communal support: "When we share and we stand together, we create a ripple effect that stretches far beyond our own lives."
Gomez also reflected on the camaraderie she formed with her Emilia Perez castmates, describing the bond as essential: "They brought so much light into my life." The film experience was defined by its mutual support, a cherished memory she carries forward.
