Selena Gomez Reflects on Early Industry Confusions
Selena Gomez shared that fans often mistook her for a character she portrayed early in her career. She discussed this during a recent appearance on The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast recorded at Chapman University.
While addressing the audience, the 32-year-old actress revealed her experiences from "Wizards of Waverly Place," which aired on Disney Channel for four seasons from 2007 to 2012. She noted how being mistyped as Alex Russo never bothered her.
"We taped 'Wizards' in front of a live audience every Friday. It brought an incredible high," she explained. "Making kids laugh uncontrollably felt pure, like the coolest feeling." Gomez continued, "Many kids recognize me solely as Alex and ask, 'Where's your wand?' It shows we had the power to positively influence their experiences."
The singer, known for "Love On," revisited her role for the pilot of the new spin-off, "Wizards Beyond Waverly Place." She serves as an executive producer alongside her former castmate, David Henrie.
Henrie commented about their reunion, stating, "[Selena and I] have maintained great contact and remain good friends." During the premiere event in October, Gomez spoke with PEOPLE about character evolution since the original series.
"I feel we've pretty much continued from where we left off. It showcases a mature Justin and Alex," she remarked. "The audience remains curious about their journeys, but we fell back into a comforting rhythm."
