Shawn Mendes Discusses Complicated Love Triangle with Camila Cabello and Sabrina Carpenter
Shawn Mendes has seemingly addressed his complicated love triangle, involving Camila Cabello and Sabrina Carpenter. During his appearance on the December 12 episode of John Mayer’s SiriusXM show "How’s Life?" Mendes discussed aspects of this relationship drama without explicitly naming anyone.
He stated, "So, I’m with someone, and two days before going to hang with my ex, I express my intentions because I have unresolved feelings." The 26-year-old reflected that he should have given "two weeks" notice instead of two days.
Mayer, 47, prompted Mendes to consider his actions, asking, "Is there something that you could say, 'Yeah, I played that wrong?'" Mendes shared his profound takeaway: "No one gets out of this life without getting hurt, and no one gets out without hurting someone."
From 2019 to 2021, Mendes and Cabello, 27, dated after years of friendship. In February 2023, Mendes was seen with Carpenter, 25, which fueled speculation. They attended the Vanity Fair Oscars Party separately that March. While Entertainment Tonight claimed they were dating, Mendes denied it. After being spotted kissing Cabello at Coachella in April 2023, Mendes and Cabello reunified but eventually ended their relationship in June. A source revealed that Cabello opted to end things, leaving Mendes "very upset."
Carpenter’s fans noticed references to this situation on her latest album, Short n’ Sweet. She indicated that the title reflects relationships that, though brief, impacted her significantly. In the song "Coincidence," Carpenter sings about a man reuniting with his ex shortly after breaking up.
"The second I put my head on your chest / She knew, she’s got a real sixth sense," Carpenter sings. "Now her name comes up once, then it comes up twice / And without her even bein’ here, she’s back in your life."
Adding to the controversy, the music video for Carpenter’s track "Taste" features Jenna Ortega as the girlfriend of Carpenter’s ex, which heightened the speculation. The single conveys a message to an ex's new girlfriend with lines addressing their relationship directly: "I heard you’re back together and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you / If you want forever, I bet you do / Just know you’ll taste me too."
An awkward moment arose when Mendes performed at the September MTV Video Music Awards. Immediately following his performance, Carpenter took the stage with a medley that included "Taste," along with her hits "Espresso" and "Please Please Please."
