Snap launches AI tools for advanced augmented reality
Snap Inc, the parent company of Snapchat, has unveiled its latest advancements in augmented reality (AR) technology. The new generative AI tools will enhance the realism of special effects when users film themselves using their phone cameras. By overlaying computerized effects onto real-world photos and videos, Snapchat aims to stay ahead of its social media competitors.
Alongside this launch, Snap also introduced an upgraded version of its developer program, Lens Studio, enabling artists and developers to create AR features for Snapchat and other platforms more easily. In the coming months, Snapchat users can expect to access advanced AR special effects, known as lenses.
Notably, Snap's chief technology officer, Bobby Murphy, shared that the enhanced Lens Studio will significantly reduce the time required to create AR effects, enabling quicker realization of complex projects. Murphy emphasized the tools' dual nature, allowing seasoned users to explore new creative realms while maintaining an intuitive interface for newcomers.
The new suite of generative AI tools included in Lens Studio adds further convenience and efficiency. Developers can rely on an AI assistant for answering questions and streamlining the development process. Additionally, artists can simply input a prompt to automatically generate a three-dimensional image to be used in their AR lenses, eliminating the need to start from scratch when creating 3D models.
Snap also has future plans to expand AR experiences beyond facial features, aiming to generate entire body-based AR encounters. This could include creating new outfits, a challenging task currently, but one that Snap seeks to conquer.
