SNL Writer Laughs Off Morgan Wallen’s Sudden Departure

Morgan Wallen made headlines after his abrupt exit from Saturday Night Live on Saturday, March 29. The country singer walked off the stage during the show's ending credits, drawing attention online. Following his departure, Wallen posted a photo on Instagram featuring an airplane with the caption, "Get me to God’s country."
The situation did not go unnoticed by SNL writer Josh Patten. On March 30, Patten shared an Instagram Story that appeared to poke fun at Wallen’s social media commentary. He posted an image of a Krispy Kreme box truck in New York City with the same caption, "Get me to God’s country," referencing Wallen’s earlier post. However, Patten later clarified that his post was not meant to mock. He shared a screenshot of his 2023 Apple Music Replay, showcasing four Wallen songs in the top five of his playlist. He added a rolling eyes emoji to another Story with a comment hinting that he might not be a fan of Wallen.

Wallen performed two songs from his upcoming album as the guest musical act—"I’m the Problem" and "Just in Case," which releases on May 16. Though he did not participate in any sketches with episode host Mikey Madison, he did give her a hug before leaving the stage abruptly.
Some viewers pondered whether there was any drama behind the scenes, but no SNL cast members have publicly commented about Wallen's behavior or his swift exit.
This incident marks another hurdle in Wallen's relationship with SNL, which began during the Covid-19 pandemic. In October 2020, he was removed as an SNL musical guest after breaking Covid protocols by attending a gathering in an Alabama bar. Wallen later stated, "I was getting ready for SNL... and I got a call from the show... because of Covid protocols, which I understand." He acknowledged his poor judgment and the implications for his career.
Wallen eventually returned as the musical guest in December 2020, appearing in a sketch where he was humorously cautioned about maintaining proper protocols. Jason Bateman, the host, warned him, "Somebody’s gonna post a video of you ignoring Covid protocols, and the whole internet’s gonna freak out."
