Tallulah Willis Reflects on Dad Bruce Willis’ Life Lessons During Autism Journey
Tallulah Willis, 30, recently shared a valuable lesson from her father, Bruce Willis, in relation to her autism diagnosis. "One beautiful aspect is the ability to give myself grace," she told Us Weekly on Tuesday, October 22. Bruce taught her to be "gentle with yourself." This approach helps Tallulah combat the tendency to judge herself harshly regarding her autism. "I often saw my autism's traits as deterrents," she explained.
As she learns to embrace self-grace, Tallulah recognizes her parents' influence on this journey. They encouraged her to slow down, which she admits is challenging. "It's probably one of the hardest things in the world for me," she said. Tallulah is the youngest of Bruce and ex-wife Demi Moore's three children. The couple, who divorced in 2000, also has daughters Rumer, 36, and Scout, 33. Bruce married Emma Heming Willis in 2009, and they have daughters Mabel, 12, and Evelyn, 10.
In March, Tallulah announced her diagnosis by sharing an old video where she playfully interacted with Bruce on a red carpet. Her caption read, "Tell me you're autistic without telling me you're autistic." Although diagnosed at 29, she realized she had signs of autism from childhood. "I would become overstimulated by sound," she recalled, noting a system she developed with her second-grade teacher, allowing her to sit under her desk using earplugs when things got noisy.
Reflecting on her diagnosis, Tallulah expressed that there might not have been enough information available in her youth to identify her as autistic, despite the signs present. "I can only recognize them in retrospect," she noted. Regarding sharing her diagnosis publicly, she clarified that while she felt "mindful," she wasn’t nervous. "I simply thought, 'How do I want to share this?'" For her, sharing the video with her dad felt special and relatable, highlighting its importance to her identity. She admitted there was no prior discussion with others before posting, as her instinct was to spread awareness.
Tallulah received recognition at the 2024 Autism Speaks Gala in Los Angeles on October 24. "Being honored feels surreal; I often experience imposter syndrome," she remarked. The impact of her diagnosis brought unprecedented relief, yet she humorously awaits the moment someone might take it away. The acknowledgment from friends, family, and the community left her in awe.
