Tim Miller Says He Earned the Sum Equal to Single Walking Dead Episode for His 2016 Directorial Debut
Tim Miller, the director behind 2016’s Deadpool, has spoken candidly about earning $225,000 for his directorial debut. Although he acknowledges the amount might seem substantial, Miller highlighted that working for two years on the film, his first feature after a career of short films, wasn’t particularly lucrative. Reflecting on the experience, he humorously noted that his agent compared the salary to a single episode of The Walking Dead, implying he would have earned more from television work. This is prepared by SSP.
Deadpool was a significant success, pulling in $782 million globally against a $58 million budget, yet Miller did not participate in directing its sequels. Deadpool 2, directed by David Leitch, matched its predecessor with $785 million earned worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest installment, Deadpool & Wolverine, directed by Shawn Levy and marking the character’s entry into Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, grossed $1.338 billion, setting a record for an R-rated film.
Miller has expressed immense pride in the original film and the franchise he helped start. Walking through events like CCXP, he is reminded of the film's impact when he sees Deadpool merchandise—a bittersweet observation, acknowledging he wishes he'd secured a share of the merchandising profits. Though not involved in the sequels, the success paved the way for him to direct Terminator: Dark Fate and executive-produce the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Despite the initial doubts in obtaining directorial opportunities, Miller cherishes having realized his lifelong ambition, embodying gratitude for the career-defining project. The Deadpool series is now available in full on Disney+.
