Tonya Harding Responds to Tragic Plane Crash Involving Figure Skaters
Tonya Harding is grieving the victims of the American Airlines plane crash that occurred in Washington, D.C., after colliding with an army helicopter.
On January 30, the former professional figure skater, now 54, expressed her sorrow through social media. She posted about her devastation concerning the incident that resulted in over 60 fatalities. Among the dead are at least 14 professional U.S. and international figure skaters. "The events that took place last night in Washington D.C. are absolutely devastating 💔," Harding shared on Instagram. She revealed that members of the U.S. figure skating team and their families were on board the flight.
Harding conveyed her support in the wake of this tragedy, stating, "I’m sending my love and prayers to all the victims and their families." Her storied past includes a controversial rivalry with Nancy Kerrigan. Kerrigan was famously attacked in 1994 by a man working for Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly. This rivalry inspired the film *I, Tonya*, where Harding was portrayed by Margot Robbie.
Nancy Kerrigan also spoke out about the plane crash during a press conference on January 30. "I’m not sure how to process it, which is why I’m here," the 55-year-old said while expressing her grief. She noted that her husband, her agent, had been receiving numerous requests for interviews regarding the tragic event. "I didn’t feel it was right to be home and doing interviews for this," she explained. Kerrigan emphasized the importance of being together with her community during such a difficult time.
"I just feel for the athletes, the skaters, their families, and anyone on that plane," she continued. "This is a tragic event for everyone involved. We’ve faced tragedies before and have shown strength as Americans. My response is to be with my loved ones and support."
The collision occurred as American Airlines flight 5342 was attempting to land at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The tragedy involved a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter. As of January 30, emergency officials have recovered 28 bodies and report no survivors among the passengers on the flight, which carried 60 individuals along with four crew members. The helicopter was carrying three U.S. soldiers.
