Why Travis Kelce Used the Nickname "Charles" in Childhood
Ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory over the Houston Texans on January 18, Jason Kelce revealed an interesting detail about his brother, Travis. Growing up, Travis introduced himself with the name "Charles."
Before his NFL career, Travis dabbled in NBA fandom — well, sort of. According to Jason, Travis was inspired by his favorite basketball player, Charles Barkley.
During a pregame interview on ESPN’s Postseason NFL Countdown, Jason stated, "He also told the entire block his name was Charles because his favorite basketball player was Charles Barkley." He added that neighbors confirmed it during a block party, saying, "There goes Charles."
In addition, Jason reflected on their childhood in Cleveland, mentioning snow days when both he and Travis acted fairly recklessly. "That’s the kind of kid Travis was," he said. "He lived up to all of his sports idols for sure."
Nicknames appear to be a likely theme within the Kelce family. Jason, a former Philadelphia Eagles lineman, has daughters Wyatt (5), Elliotte (3), and Bennett (22 months) with his wife, Kylie. Recently, he revealed the nickname he uses for her.
"I call her Joe," he said on a December episode of the Good Mythical Morning podcast alongside Kylie. He felt this nickname fit her because, "when she played field hockey, she reminded me of a baby kangaroo" due to her squat.
The 37-year-old continued, "I started with Joey and narrowed it down to Joe. That’s my only nickname."
Kylie shared her thoughts on spouse nicknames. "Sweetie he's not allowed to say," she noted. "Certain nicknames — like sweetie, babe, or hun — should only come from a waitress in a diner in South Philly. Using those feels aggressive in a way that is not welcome."
