Will Smith Teases Potential Connection to New Matrix Project
Will Smith has hinted at a potential new project, referencing his choice to decline the role of Neo in The Matrix. This has sparked speculation among fans about a connection to the iconic sci-fi franchise.
New Matrix Possibility
Fans are buzzing about the possibility of Will Smith entering The Matrix. On January 6, he shared a mysterious video on social media. This clip addressed his earlier decision to turn down the lead role in the franchise created by Lana and Lilly Wachowski.
"In 1997, the Wachowskis offered Will Smith the role of Neo in The Matrix," the video stated. Smith opted for Wild Wild West, believing it better suited him. The clip asked a provocative question: What if The Matrix had featured Will Smith as Neo?
"Wake up, Will…" the video urged. "The Matrix has you…"
Despite this intriguing teaser, fans shouldn't get their hopes too high. Reports from Variety indicate that, although Warner Bros. is developing a new Matrix movie for April 2024, Will Smith is not currently attached to the project.
The Matrix Legacy
The original Matrix, released in 1999, featured Keanu Reeves as Neo. He portrayed a computer programmer destined to free humanity from the machines controlling the Matrix. The film's immense success led to three sequels: The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, both released in 2003, followed by The Matrix Resurrections in 2021.
Previously, Will explained his choice to decline the role, which was offered to Sandra Bullock as well. In a 2019 YouTube video, he candidly shared that he didn't grasp the film's innovative concept during his meeting with the Wachowskis.
"After we made Men in Black, the Wachowskis came in, but they had only made one movie," he recalled. "As it turns out, they're geniuses, yet there's a fine line in a pitch meeting between genius and what I saw."
A Favor to Fans?
Will maintained his stance on his choice, asserting that declining the role might have been wise given the film's acclaim. "Keanu was perfect; Laurence Fishburne was perfect," he proclaimed. "I probably would’ve messed The Matrix up. I would’ve ruined it. So I did y’all a favor!"
