Yaya DaCosta Reflects on ANTM Backlash and Reunion with Tyra Banks

Actress Yaya DaCosta recently spoke out regarding the backlash surrounding the show America’s Next Top Model (ANTM). Her comments follow Tyra Banks’ remarks about the show at the ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards.
In a video she shared, DaCosta, 42, responded to Banks’ acknowledgment that the show had its missteps. During her speech, Banks admitted she may have "said some dumb s---" and recognized the program’s impact in paving the way for future opportunities.
Past criticisms surged online in 2020, stemming from old clips showcasing troubling moments from the series. In one instance, Banks instructed a contestant to "fix" a gap in her teeth. Another segment featured a contentious "race swapping" challenge that involved contestants in Blackface.
DaCosta reflected on these past controversies, pointing out ANTM's "manipulative editing" and its role in exacerbating issues like body dysmorphia and eating disorders. She also noted that some of her "most shocking" experiences from the show never made it to air. On a positive note, she credited the show for providing her with valuable tools that aided her career, including finding ways to "regulate my nervous system."
The Whitney star attended the awards ceremony but missed Banks' speech due to a trip to the restroom. Upon returning, she unexpectedly encountered Banks at the photo studio, leading to a heartwarming moment between the two.
DaCosta candidly shared, had she met Banks a few years prior, she might have felt anxious and fearful because of the painful narrative she carried about her ANTM experience. However, she expressed that she has found forgiveness.

When they finally reunited, DaCosta found warmth in their exchange. She described their conversation as enjoyable, recounting fond memories associated with their time on ANTM. "It was fun to reminisce, like it was actually fun," she said, noting happier memories, such as the acting challenge with Taye Diggs.
The actress reassured viewers that no animosity lingered between them. Their reunion concluded with a heartfelt embrace that conveyed love and forgiveness. "I held that woman… to ensure she felt fully forgiven, appreciated, and loved," she shared.
In her video, DaCosta emphasized the significance of this moment, expressing how it symbolized the closing of a difficult chapter in her life as a new one begins. She affirmed her newfound freedom from negativity.
She urged her audience to also seek forgiveness in their own lives, stating, "Now is such an amazing time to do it." She emphasized the concept that "forgiveness isn't for other people; it's for us," advocating for compassion and kindness.
