Allison Janney Excitedly Talks About Collaborating with Brad Whitford Once More
Allison Janney expressed her delight about reuniting with Bradley Whitford for Netflix's "The Diplomat." She described their friendship as akin to a brother-sister bond. Janney, 65, found it "absolutely crazy" that Whitford was cast as her husband in the show.
At the 12th Annual Makeup Artists & Hairstylists Guild Awards in Los Angeles on February 15, Janney discussed her experience working with Whitford. She received the Distinguished Artisan Award that evening, honoring Hollywood's best in makeup and hairstyling. "When [showrunner] Debra Cahn suggested casting Brad Whitford as my husband, I thought it was the best idea," Janney shared with PEOPLE.
Cahn, a writer for "The West Wing," collaborated with Janney and Whitford on the Emmy-winning political drama from 1999 to 2006. In "The West Wing," Janney played Press Secretary C.J. Cregg, while Whitford portrayed Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman. Janney jokingly noted that kissing Whitford feels "a little bit" like kissing her brother. She recalled telling him, "We're just going to do this. We can handle it."
"It’s hilarious to think we're doing this together, but I couldn’t love it more. It’s perfect for reuniting in this political drama," she said. Janney praised "The Diplomat," calling the series "unbelievable" and a "great show." She highlighted Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell’s roles, adding, "Their performances are so divine, and I’m happy to be part of it."
The political thriller centers on U.S. Ambassador to the U.K. Kate Wyler (Russell) and her husband Hal Wyler (Sewell) as they navigate the complexities of preventing a global war. "Having Brad on board makes it even more delicious," Janney conveyed her excitement, emphasizing her eagerness for the show's continuation.
Joining the series in season 2, Janney plays Vice President Grace Penn, poised for the presidency after shocking developments at the season 2 finale. Meanwhile, Whitford will appear in season 3 as her husband, Todd Penn. Cahn described Whitford as the "fantasy version of Todd for all of us," which left the team thrilled his casting worked out.
"Bradley perfectly fits into our dream cast," said executive producer Janice Williams. Currently, there is no official premiere date for season 3. Filming will conclude on March 20, with a release expected later this year, according to Netflix. Both seasons of "The Diplomat" can now be streamed on Netflix, while "The West Wing" is available on Max.
