Amanda Seyfried Addresses Viral ‘Wicked’ Video Misinterpretation
Amanda Seyfried clarified that a viral video of her singing "Popular" from "Wicked" isn’t an audition tape for the role of Glinda.
The Oscar nominee, at 39 years old, responded to rumors surrounding the clip. She mentioned that the video was rather a playful moment behind the scenes during a photo shoot, not an audition. Seyfried explained, "I think it was during COVID. I was doing a Lancôme shoot in Long Island City. Elizabeth Stewart was my stylist," she told People in an interview that was published on Saturday, December 14. The stylist shared the clip on Instagram about two years ago.
In the video, Seyfried appeared in a remarkable silver princess dress while performing one of Glinda’s well-known songs. She noted, "I was not auditioning for "Wicked" yet, but I knew it was coming up. I was just f—ing around, and I was like, ‘This dress is so Glinda.’ And Elizabeth was like, ‘Do it.’ Later, she posted it." The video resurfaced recently as fans connected it to Seyfried's rumored audition for the film, celebrating her Golden Globe nomination for *The Dropout*.
Since the release of "Wicked" last month, fans have mistaken the video for an audition tape, although Seyfried did audition for Glinda, a role now portrayed by Ariana Grande. "I went hard for that, for sure," she expressed regarding her audition experience. "It was a very long process. Everything happens the way it’s meant to."
With growing confusion around the video, Seyfried remarked that perhaps it was "better if it hadn’t been posted." Even if she didn't land the role, Seyfried appreciated "Wicked" when she saw it in theaters, describing it as "fantastic."
"It’s an extravaganza, which is what she [Grande] does very well. My kids have been playing the soundtrack nonstop. Everything is as it’s meant to be," the Emmy winner added.
Several other stars also auditioned for Glinda's role, including René Rapp and Dove Cameron. Rapp confirmed in a November 2022 appearance on "Watch What Happens Live" saying, "I did audition for it. Ariana’s gonna be f—ing amazing." Cameron echoed this in April 2023, stating, "I definitely went out for it."
She emphasized, "For everyone who auditioned, it was a very long process. It was one of the longer processes I’ve been part of."
