Ariana Grande Discusses Navigating PTSD, Grief, and Anxiety During Creation of Thank U, Next and Sweetener Albums
Ariana Grande recently shared insights into her emotional journey during the creation of her albums Sweetener and Thank U, Next, discussing her experiences with PTSD, depression, and anxiety in the Hollywood Reporter podcast, Awards Chatter. The Grammy-winning singer recounted how these albums were shaped during a challenging period marked by various personal losses and emotional struggles. This is prepared by SSP.
The release of Sweetener in August 2018 came after the 2017 Manchester bombing incident at her Dangerous Woman Tour, which resulted in numerous casualties and injuries. Shortly after this, Grande faced another personal tragedy with the accidental overdose death of her ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller, in September 2018. The swift creation and release of Thank U, Next in February 2019 acted as a significant personal remedy during these dark times.
Grande described her creative process as a means of survival, citing music as a vital component in addressing her mental health issues: "I was doing so much therapy. Music was a part of that remedy and absolutely contributed to saving my life." Despite hesitation from her record label about moving quickly from Sweetener, Grande prioritized artistic authenticity over industry norms, indicating a desire to break free from conventional rules.
Further, she embraced the healing concept of connecting with her fan base. Maintaining close ties with them offered mutual support and was "one of the most beautiful pieces of the puzzle" in her career. This shared connection not only enriched her journey but also fostered a deep bond with fans who often found solace in her music.
The urgency with which Thank U, Next was produced and released reflects Grande's need for emotional release and creative liberation. Creating music that paralleled her personal healing allowed her to navigate through adversity and establish supportive links with her audience, turning her vulnerability into a source of strength.
