Ariana Grande Updates Fans on Her Parents' Relationship After Divorce
Ariana Grande recently shared insights about her parents, Joan Grande and Ed Butera, following their divorce during her childhood. Despite their past estrangement, she successfully encouraged them to reconcile after many years.
Ariana humorously noted that her parents seemingly do not take cues from her song "We Can’t Be Friends." After enduring a rocky relationship post-divorce in the early 2000s, she expressed that now, "They’re not together, but they’re best friends." On the February 10 episode of WTF with Marc Maron, she revealed, "It took 18 years, and I forced them to communicate again. I really did."
As she recounted her efforts, Ariana revealed a pivotal moment during her 24th birthday in 2017. At that time, she urged her parents to mend their relationship. She said, "I love you both so much. It's been such a long time. Figure it the f--k out. Hello, it’s been 18 years. Please get over it." And they did.
Ariana described their reconciliation as the "perfect thing." She clarified, "They just had some sort of beautiful conversation or realized how much they love me is so much louder than whatever nonsense happened way back when. It’s really beautiful." Additionally, she reflected, "It did something to my brain, too. It was really a beautiful, healthy thing."
For over a decade, healing has been central to the Grande-Butera journey. Ariana previously described "falling out of touch" with her father in 2013 as her toughest experience. In an interview with Seventeen in 2014, she shared, "It took me so long to be okay with it." She acknowledged that it’s normal to love someone even if you don’t always get along.
Despite past struggles, Ariana has successfully repaired her relationship with Ed. She honored him and her younger self with her full name, Ariana Grande-Butera, in the Wicked end credits. She explained, "It was a big surprise and he cried. It was very emotional."
