‘Babygirl’ Director Defends Age Gap Between Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson
‘Babygirl’ director Halina Reijn is standing by the 29-year age difference between stars Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson, US Weekly reported.
In a recent interview with "W Magazine'' on December 25, Reijn addressed the trend of romantic films featuring older women with younger men. Kidman has also been in Netflix's "A Family Affair" alongside Zac Efron, while Anne Hathaway starred in "The Idea of You" with Nicholas Galitzine.
Reijn stated, "If we see a movie where the male actor matches the female actor's age, we find that odd. This is insane. Age gaps should normalize, demonstrating women's diverse relationships." She emphasized the need to break free from societal constraints, reflecting on the impact of patriarchy in media portrayals.
In "Babygirl," 7-year-old Kidman portrays a CEO commencing a passionate relationship with 28-year-old intern Dickinson.
Earlier this week, Kidman shared her reaction to early reviews in a discussion with "The Hollywood Reporter." "This film is quite releasing. Some viewers called it the most disturbing film they've seen, and I was taken aback," she said.
Kidman expressed appreciation for playing a more sensual older character. "Women often experience dismissal regarding their sexuality as they grow older. It felt wonderful to be seen as such," she commented, highlighting her character as powerful yet uncertain about her desires. "This theme is genuinely relatable for many."
The Oscar winner described the film’s nature as "raw and dangerous." "I was surprised that they granted funds for it," she stated, noting its content explored themes rarely suited for younger characters.
Dickinson reflected on the intimate scenes during filming. "We discussed boundaries with the intimacy coordinator before Nicole and I worked out what felt right for us," he shared with "Variety." They created a secure space to ensure comfort while staying true to the film's vision.
