Brian Jordan Alvarez Denies Sexual Assault Allegation
Brian Jordan Alvarez, star and creator of English Teacher, has denied allegations of sexual assault made by his The Gay and Wonderful Life of Caleb Gallo co-star Jon Ebeling. These accusations arose from an incident alleged to have occurred in 2016 during the filming of the web series.
Ebeling filed a police report on September 1, which was disclosed on December 17. In an article by New York Magazine's Vulture, Ebeling detailed his claims about Alvarez allegedly coercing him into sexual acts on two occasions. One incident reported occurred in Ebeling's apartment, while another took place on set. Alvarez, 37, was both a writer and director for the series, wherein these incidents are said to have happened.
Alvarez's representatives swiftly denied the allegations, insisting that their interactions were always consensual. "Numerous witnesses can attest to this," they stated. A spokesperson highlighted that in 2018, two years after these alleged incidents, Ebeling affirmed on tape that interactions were consensual. The spokesperson asserted that Ebeling has promoted falsehoods without merit, which numerous media outlets have hesitated to publish when shown contradicting evidence.
Alvarez's representatives criticized New York Magazine for its handling of the allegations. They claimed the publication acted recklessly and prioritally sensationalism over factual accuracy. "That is beyond disappointing," the statement asserted, indicating their concerns about the magazine’s editorial standards. Following the allegations, Alvarez is reportedly seeking legal advice to determine his next actions.
Ebeling claimed that pressure to engage in sexual activities with Alvarez began in October 2015. He states that he faced significant pressure to maintain his friendship with Alvarez's best friend, Stephanie Koenig, who was also involved in English Teacher. Ebeling asserts that during a visit to his apartment, Alvarez suggested they engage in a physical comparison.
Ebeling stated he felt coerced into acts contrary to his orientation, describing a history of conflicting emotions. He expressed regret over his decision to allow Alvarez to perform oral sex on him, stating he felt pressure to appease the situation.
Ebeling claimed an episode from Caleb Gallo, where characters engage in a similar act, was inspired by his experiences with Alvarez. According to him, an alleged sexual assault transpired while filming a scene for the show. He recalled feeling "frozen" as the incident unfolded, believing he was powerless given his role in the production.
Alvarez responded by asserting that Ebeling "consented verbally" but Ebeling rejected this claim vigorously. He challenged Alvarez to produce evidence supporting his claims of consent and firmly denied any approval for the incident. Despite the trauma of the allegations, Ebeling indicated a desire to move forward in his career, chasing opportunities to work creatively.
