Chad Michael Murray Nearly Quit Acting After ‘One Tree Hill’: ‘I Couldn’t Do It Anymore’
Chad Michael Murray is now spreading holiday cheer in Netflix’s new film, "The Merry Gentlemen." However, this opportunity almost didn't happen, US Weekly reported.
The actor, now 43, revealed that he nearly quit acting after his time on "One Tree Hill." This period coincided with his rise to fame and the pressures that accompanied it. In an interview with Interview Magazine, published on December 11, Murray said, "There was a moment where I was quitting. I was done. I just couldn’t do it anymore. It was right after I left "One Tree Hill," and it wasn’t because of the fandom."
Murray continued, "During the ages of 18 to 25, you make mistakes while developing life experiences." He emphasized that errors can still happen even in adulthood. "But it’s tough to move beyond moments when you lack the maturity to see the complexity of your situation."
Murray, known for portraying Lucas Scott in "One Tree Hill" for six seasons, rocketed to stardom when the WB/CW show premiered in 2003. He subsequently secured notable film roles in "Freaky Friday" and "House of Wax," Still, the actor faced challenges from the spotlight. He previously had a romantic relationship with "One Tree Hill" co-star Sophia Bush, marrying in 2005 and divorcing a year later.
"That was difficult for me," he shared. "There are so many people watching your life – like going to a grocery store and hearing, ‘Oh, that’s the guy from the tabloid.’ Sometimes, negative thoughts consume you, and I certainly experienced that." Eventually, Murray decided to shift focus, stating, "This is not what I want."
Now in his 40s, Murray finds more balance with fame by prioritizing his personal relationships. He has been married to actress Sarah Roemer since 2015, and together they have three children.
"My life's goal is to be a great father and husband. I love acting, but my true passion lies at home," he explained. "Finding the right partner meant navigating both the good and bad experiences along the way."
Earlier this year, Murray looked back on his rapid marriage to Bush. "I was a baby. I didn’t understand relationships or commitment," he confessed to "The Cut." "You reach a point where you might think, ‘Getting married? How exciting!’ but it's more complex than that."
