CNN Denies Altering Video of Diddy Assaulting Cassie
CNN has rejected allegations that it modified video footage showing Sean "Diddy" Combs assaulting his former girlfriend, Cassie, in a hotel hallway.
In a court filing related to Diddy’s federal indictment, his legal team claimed that "CNN purchased the only known copy of the hotel surveillance footage, uploaded it into free editing software, altered the video, and then destroyed the original footage." This information was revealed in a report by TMZ on March 13. Diddy’s defense further asserted that CNN changed the initial broadcast's footage from May 2024, including covering the timestamp and altering the video sequence by speeding it up. This alteration allegedly created a false impression that events took place faster than they actually did, leading to an inaccurately represented depiction of the incident.
In response, CNN stated to TMZ, "CNN never altered the video and did not destroy the original copy of the footage, which was retained by the source." The network aired the story several months prior to Diddy’s arrest. However, Diddy’s lawyers emphasized that their communications with CNN clearly indicated that the original video file had been destroyed.
The hotel security footage, which depicted Diddy, 55, assaulting Cassie, 38, in 2016, garnered significant attention when CNN aired it in May 2024.
At the time, Diddy expressed remorse regarding his actions through an Instagram video. He stated, "It’s difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life. Sometimes you gotta do that. I was f—ked up. I mean, I hit rock bottom but I make no excuses. My behavior in that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions." He acknowledged seeking professional help and attending therapy and rehab, expressing a commitment to personal improvement.
Diddy is currently incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, facing federal charges, including sex trafficking, racketeering, conspiracy, and transportation to engage in prostitution after his arrest in September 2024. He has denied all allegations and awaits a trial scheduled for May 5.
Diddy’s attorney, Marc Agnifilo, expressed disappointment regarding the prosecution, calling it unjust. He stated that Diddy is a music icon, self-made entrepreneur, family man, and philanthropist who has built an empire over 30 years while uplifting the Black community. Agnifilo acknowledged Diddy’s imperfections but maintained that he is not a criminal.
Additionally, Diddy faces numerous lawsuits from individuals claiming he harmed and exploited them through drugs, alcohol, and physical abuse. He has denied these allegations as well.
